Relationships we establish with our bosses at work are not always cooperative, which is what would be expected to improve the company’s productivity. Teamwork is what all companies demand and, however, it is the bosses themselves who refuse to position themselves as one more in the effort to make the company work.
Procedures such as presenting a project, an idea, requesting vacations or a well-deserved salary increase become an agonizing process that paralyzes us due to the fear we have of the boss’s reaction. It’s not your thing.
Bosses or superiors
The fact is that this fear that the boss instills in us originates from our own socio-cultural structure; not surprisingly, there is another word to designate bosses, which is “superiors”. Something that says a lot about how we distribute the roles and the importance of each one in the workplace.
It is true that it is the boss who has the ability to make you lose your job and therefore have no income to survive. But that shouldn’t put you in a position of superiority since the ultimate goal of the boss-employee relationship is company productivity.
We have all had to deal on more than one occasion with a bad boss, with an overly controlling boss, with an arrogant boss or with a boss who imposed such a distance that we were terrified of the simple idea of running into him in the corridor and having to say hello.
Overcome fear of the boss
But this type of bosses, who prevent proper communication between the different parts of the company, are not the best model to follow, therefore, our fear is still somewhat unfounded. Don’t see your boss as a superior being more competent than you. Your boss has different powers than yours, either by training, affiliation or a matter of age, but the objective of both is the same.
What you have to worry about the most is that your fear of the boss harms your performance at work, so you should worry about the possibility of dismissal. But being an effective and efficient person, you have to find a way to access it and communicate to present your demands, your needs, even your ideas. Remember at all times that we are not in a slave society, no matter how much you sometimes have that feeling.
Your boss is a normal person, with his personal and work mistakes (even if he doesn’t admit them to you) that life has placed in that position. If you need to change the date of your vacation, you have the right to negotiate, if you need a day to go to the doctor, you don’t even have to think about it and if you need a salary increase, go to his office resolutely. Because if you demonstrate self-confidence, that feeling of fear will decrease considerably.
