How to deal with work after the holidays

Things stand and with unemployment adding to its share by the day, it almost seems tacky to go to work grudgingly. But let’s face it, going back to work after the Christmas break feels bad, very bad. Perhaps it is because of the special nature of these Christmas holidays, where we have had to deal with family conflicts, with excess alcohol and food, and with emotions on the surface, but picking up the pace after Christmas is very difficult.

The first day of work

It’s almost unavoidable. You arrive at work the first day after Christmas and you feel like you’re in another world, you don’t recognize your office or your work desk, and you may have to ask for help to turn on your computer. You took it so seriously the last time they told you that you had to learn to disconnect from work that this Christmas you have completely forgotten about your profession.

Thus, it is normal that the first day it is difficult for you to maintain concentration, that you are clueless, a little lost and that you do not find out anything. Surely these days a lot of tasks have been accumulating and you don’t know where to start. To top it off, getting up early this morning for the first time in two weeks has left a sadness in your mind that you can’t get rid of.

And although deep down you know that you are privileged to have a job to return to every morning (so early), your first morning will be so chaotic that you will curse the Mayans for getting the date of the end of the world wrong. But it is very important that you do not let yourself be overcome by chaos and that you do not lengthen the adaptation period too much so as not to drag the pending work forever.

How to wake up on the first day of work?

The day you start work after Christmas, it is essential that you give yourself some extra time, setting the alarm clock a little earlier. Take a good shower and prepare a breakfast  without too much haste so that stress does not appear from the first moment. Once in the office, try to enter smiling, not for falsehood, but to improve your own spirits.

If you don’t know where to start, don’t worry. Keep in mind that work that has waited two full weeks can wait an extra day. So it is better that you spend the first morning organizing the next few days by ordering the tasks according to priority. Once you are clear about what is most urgent, you can start working.

So that your first day does not turn into hell, it is better that you take it easy, avoid meetings and decision-making as much as possible until you have caught up. And remember that the basis of effectiveness is in a good organization. It’s okay if you spend the first day planning your tasks.
