There is a distorted concept of motivation in the business world. Many workers, for example, think negatively before an unexpected meeting with the boss. This is due to the fact that we are more used to negative criticism and to being told what we have failed in due to a matter of education; and it is that since childhood, parents tend to correct children more than to congratulate them for their merits and for everything they have done well.
In this way, due to a cultural issue, it is considered that good work is always taken for granted, that is, it is part of the obligation of any worker and the commitment they have established with the company. However, workers need to hear reinforcement phrases from the boss or co-workers, especially when they have been in the same job for years.
Positive reinforcement begins to gain strength in the world of work thanks to the rise of emotional intelligence and the world of coaching. That is, through kind words, a person feels valued and recognized. For a moment, stop being just another worker to be a person with emotions and feelings.
How to motivate workers?
What phrases can any boss use to motivate a worker? “You have done a good job”, “thank you for all the effort you have made”, “once again, you have outdone yourself”, “I am very proud to have workers like you in my project”, “you are a talented person”…
Instead, there are bosses who never tell their workers these messages even though they think they have an excellent team because they believe that employees can become too confident and relax. Nothing is further from reality, motivation, positive reinforcement, accompaniment produces a feeling of well-being.
Consequences of lack of motivation
The lack of motivation causes the frustrated worker syndrome, job apathy, lack of adequate performance, lack of initiative, and also the desire to change jobs. Instead, through verbal rewards or a salary increase, a worker becomes aware that he is part of a team project.
An environment in which there is more negative criticism than positive reinforcement is inadequate to fully work. But neither is it good to be in an environment in which congratulations are given away in a simple way and talent is exalted in an excessive way.
It is always appropriate to find the balance to be able to interact with workers based on the current situation. In case of making a negative criticism, you should never humiliate the person, ridicule him, and hurt his self-esteem. On the contrary, he must be made to understand that more was expected of her, simply because he has great capacity. Instead of promoting guilt, set goals as a challenge to achieve.
In companies, you should not only think about results but also about people. Therefore, motivation brings quality of life to workers.
